The 38th Annual Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout, known as the Mecca of Micros, returns to the SageNet Center this December to put a bow on the 2022 racing season. We get you ready for the big event in this edition of "Everything You Need to Know" on FloRacing.

The Race(s)

The Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout is an indoor racing event held December 27 - December 31 at the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The event features six divisions of Micro Sprint racing: Winged Outlaws, Non-Wing Outlaws, Winged A-Class, Stock Non-Wing, Restricted A Class and Junior Sprints.

This year's version of the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout is the 38th running of the event called the "Mecca of Micros." The race serves as a prelude to the prestigious Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals, which will begin a week later on January 7.

The Track

The race is held on a quarter-mile clay oval built inside the SageNet Center. Clay that once covered the adjacent fairgrounds is used to create the racing surface.

Event officials began building the track on December 10, using a step-by-step process to prepare the track for both the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout and Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals.

The Format

With over 1,500 entries for this year's event, narrowing down the field to 24 feature starters in each of the six divisions is no easy task.

Step 1: The Pill Draw - When signing in for the event, drivers draw for their starting position in one of what could be as many as 30 heat races.

Step 2: Heat Races - Drivers will earn points based on their finishing position and how many positions they gain or lose during heat races. Following heat races, the top 112 in passing points are sent to qualifiers, while the rest of the field are sent to D-Mains or C-Mains to begin a potential run through the alphabet soup.

Take a look at the points chart used for Tulsa Shootout heat races and qualifiers.

Step 3: Eight Qualifiers - Each qualifier will feature a top-four inversion prior to the green flag. This gives the top 32 point-getters from heat races a great chance to earn more points. During the qualifiers, drivers will once again be racing for points. Only the top 16 in combined points (heats + qualifier) will advance to the main event. 17th-112th in points will be split into B-Mains.

Step 4: The top two finishers in D-Mains will transfer to C-Mains. The two finishers in C-Mains will transfer to B-Mains. The top two finishers in the B-Mains will transfer to a last chance qualifier. The top eight from the last chance qualifier will transfer into each division's main event.

Step 5: We have a field of 24 cars that will race for a Golden Driller trophy.

Storylines

- Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch returns to the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout after making his debut one year ago. Busch is entered in the Winged Outlaw and Non-Wing Outlaw divisions. In his debut last year, Busch impressed the crowd by charging from eighth to win his heat race. While competing in two divisions, Busch will also be offering guidance to his son Brexton in the Junior Sprints divisions.

- With four main events on the schedule, we'll be keeping an eye on how many drivers are able to qualify for all four divisions. Last year, four drivers were able to make the starting lineup for all four divisions: Emerson Axsom, Alex Bright, Tommy Kunsman and TJ Smith.

- Fresh off a Modified win at the Castrol Gateway Dirt Nationals, Ricky Thornton, Jr. returns to the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout in 2022. RTJ will be looking to qualify for a main event after missing the show one year ago.

- Open-wheel standout Logan Seavey will be competing in both the Winged Outlaw and Non-Wing Outlaw divisions. Seavey made the show in the Non-Wing Outlaw division last year but is still seeking his first Tulsa Shootout victory.

- Will a driver take home more than one golden driller trophy? Last year, we saw six different winners in six divisions. In 2021, Brian Carber took home two driller after winning the Winged A-Class and Stock Non-Wing features. Jason McDougal won three (Non-Wing Outlaw, Winged A-Class and Stock Non-Wing) of the four main events in 2018.
