Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Key Moments: Triumph, Struggles, And History

The 37th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals is now in the rear-view mirror, but what an event it was. With 365 cars descending upon Tulsa, Oklahoma to try to win a Golden Driller, everyone knew we'd all be witnessing wild moments throughout the week. From big crashes to heavy hitters struggling to surprise winners, the 2023 Chili Bowl had it all. If you missed any of it, get caught up on the Key Moments from the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl now.

Logan Seavey Holds Off Tanner Thorson To Win First Driller

Logan Seavey has been in a position to win the Chili Bowl in the past. He started from the pole in 2019 and led the first 20 laps before fading to ninth and watching glory slip away. Early in Saturday's 55-lap feature it seemed like history was doomed to repeat itself. Seavey started from the pole, led the first 20 laps, and then was passed by Cannon McIntosh. Seavey didn't waver though, and took the lead back just nine laps later. Then Seavey had to hold off the defending winner in Tanner Thorson was right on his bumper for many of the final laps. And then to top it all off, the caution flag waved as Seavey was a yard from the finish line for an incident involving Rico Abreu. But through it all, Seavey was able to hold off Thorson and finally capture that first Golden Driller.

Pole Shuffle Sets Seavey On Path To Chili Bowl Victory

With track conditions becoming a bigger storyline as the week went on, Saturday's Pole Shuffle importance began to increase with every lap turned throughout the Alphabet Soup. Everybody in the building knew that the Pole Shuffle would play a massive role in determining the eventual Chili Bowl champion. Seavey drew the second starting spot on Friday night and passed Hank Davis on Saturday to win the pole position for Saturday's feature.

Heavy Hitters Struggle

If you take a quick glance at the results from the 2022 A-Main, you'll notice quite a few pre-race favorites are either deep in the finishing order this year, or they failed to make the 24-car field in 2023. Rico Abreu finished third in 2022, but finished 21st this year. Buddy Kofoid finished right behind Abreu in fourth last year. This year he finished 18th in a D-Main after his prelim night came to a premature end while leading the feature. C.J. Leary finished seventh last year, but his Chili Bowl came to an end in the I-Main. Dillon Welch made the A-Main in 2022 and finished 22nd, but this year his day ended in a J-Main.

Hank Davis Becomes The Underdog Story

One of the best parts about the Chili Bowl is that it can take unknown drivers and turn them into household names. The Chili Bowl did exactly that for the 19-year-old driver from Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Even in his wildest dreams, Davis couldn't imagine himself standing in victory lane at the Chili Bowl, but that's exactly where he was as the top survivor of a topsy-turvy Tuesday prelim feature that saw contenders like Buddy Kofoid and Michael Pickens all have trouble.

Rico Ties Record For Most Prelim Night Victories

Rico Abreu and the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl are pretty much synonymous at this point. When one thinks of Rico Abreu, they think of his back-to-back victories in 2015 and 2016, and they think of the entire SageNet Center chanting "Rico! Rico! Rico!" while the California native stands tall atop the cage of his race car. For nearly a decade, Wednesday night at the Chili Bowl has been Rico Abreu night and it was that way once again this year. Abreu used a last-lap pass on Mitchel Moles to score his sixth-straight prelim night victory and his eighth total, tying him with Christopher Bell and Sammy Swindell for the most prelim night victories in the 37-year history of the event.

Tanner Thorson Has Eventful Evening En Route To Dominant Prelim Win

The defending Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals champion had as eventful of a Thursday as possible, and yet still managed to completely dominate his prelim feature. The evening started out with what was expected to be an uneventful heat race victory, but it was anything but uneventful. Thorson experienced a solo spin early on in his heat, but powered out of it to keep going and kept as much track position as possible. Then he put on a clinic as he methodically picked cars off one-by-one before taking the victory.

Tanner Thorson Spins Then Wins His Prelim Night Heat Race

Later that night in the third A-Main Qualifier race, Thorson just took Emerson Axsom to school. Axsom did everything he could to defend Thorson's charge, but Thorson pulled a brilliant cross-over move to take the lead and the win in the final corner of the race by just a few inches.
