Two rising stars of the West meet once again after splitting matches at the U17 World Team Trials earlier this year. Karlee Brooks of Phoenix, Arizona and Isabella Marie Gonzales of Clovis, California will battle it out at Who's Number One for the top ranking in the nation at 117 lbs. 

Karlee Brooks' trajectory has taken off like a rocket. The Valiant Prep pupil was fourth at the 2022 Super 32 but later won a loaded U17 world team trials at Women's Nationals in April of 2023, including taking two-of-three from then #1 Isabella Marie Gonzales. 

Brooks also defeated Gonzales in the finals of the prestigious High School Showcase at the 2023 US Open just a couple of weeks later.

Brooks would go on to place fifth at the U17 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. 

Gonzales' win over Brooks at the team trials was also the last domestic Brooks lost on US soil. Conversely, the losses Gonzales took at trials and at the Showcase to Brooks were also the only times she's taken a loss in over a year. Gonzales also has a Pan-Am team trials title in 2022 and a 2023 California state championship to her name. 

Brooks has one more year at Valiant Prep while Gonzales has two years remaining at Clovis East. As long as they two stay in the same weight class, expect to see them face off in finals matches for many years to come. You'll also get a chance to see them on September 2 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at this year's edition of high school wrestling's most storied event.
