2023 Who's Number One Girls Match Notes

The ten girls matches at this year's Who's Number One are sure to be incredible! If you can't watch the action live, follow along with this live blog. Refresh it often throughout the event for up-to-the-minute insight. Girls matches begin at 5:00 pm eastern which is 4:00 pm local time.
Action is just a few minutes away, and tonight's sellout crowd has already filed in. The in-venue screens are playing old Who's Number One highlights, and the could is primed for tonight's matchups!
100 lbs: #3 Madison Nieuwenhuis, SO, Michigan VPO1 #2 Rienne Murphy, SR, Indiana 2-2
First Period: Match one is under way. Nieuwenhuis takes the action to the edge, but they're grounded as they go out of bounds. Now Murphy takes a shot, but solid defense from Nieuwenhuis results in a stalemate.
Another shot gets blown dead, this one from Nieuwenhuis. There's 1:40 left on the clock as Nieuwenhuis goes on the clock for passivity. She takes a shot but can't score, and Murphy takes a 1-0 lead on the activity clock.
Nieuwenhuis takes another shot, and Murphy puts a ton of pressure on a crotch-lift attempt, but she's unable to score the exposure. 30 seconds remain in the period. Murphy gets deep on an ankle pick, but Nieuwenhuis drops to a leg to defend as time expires. The period ends 1-0 for Murphy
Second Period: Murphy takes a shot, but Nieuwenhuis ends up on a leg with the counter-attack. Neither can score, and the action is blown dead. Now Nieuwenhuis is called for passivity again, and she's going back on the clock. She shoots ,but Murphy defends as the clock expires. Murphy now leads 2-0 half way through the second period.
Nieuwenhuis takes a shot and comes out the back door. She looks for an exposure but nearly gets exposed herself. After a tough effort, she's able to finish, and now Niuwenhuis leads 2-2 on criteria with less than a minute to go.
Nieuwenhuis takes a shot that's stalemated with 13 seconds to go. She dives in on a leg again, and that's how the match will end. Nieuwenhuis takes the match and the on the strength of that second period takedown!
127 lbs: #1 Taina Fernandez, FR, Maryland VSU #2 Carley Ceshker, SO, Wisconsin 10-0
First Period: Wisconsin's own Carley Ceshker comes out to a huge applause from the home crowd. Fernandez steps on the line, and we're ready to go in a Super 32 rematch. Fernandez takes the first deep shot of the match a minute into the match. She puts her head inside Ceshker's knee for the single leg finish and transitions to a lace to take a 4-0 lead half way into the first period.
Ceshker gets deep on a single leg, but Fernandez defends for a stalemate. On the restart, Fernandez shoots in on a deep double off a couple hard fakes. She finishes and takes a 6-0 lead. Now two more exposures give Fernandez the 10-0 technical superiority victory, and she remains #1 even before she's set foot in a high school classroom.
138 lbs: #2 Kaidance Gerg, JR, Washington VPO1 #1 Valerie Hamilton, SR, Illinois 6-4
First Period: Gerg and Hamilton walk out, and Illinois native Hamilton clearly has a strong fanbase here. She uses a 2 on 1 for a hard snap, but she's unable to get the finish, and we remain scoreless a minute into the match. Gerg is warned for passivity twice, and she's on the activity clock with 1:40 left in the match. She gets in on a leg and hits an unconventional finish for a 4-point exposure from her feet. Gerg leads 4-0, and the activity clock is no longer a factor.
Hamilton drops in on a leg with less than a minute to go. Gerg looks for a cradle position then a crotch lift but can't get the exposure. They're back on their feet with 26 seconds left in the period. That's the way we'll head to the break
Second Period: Gerg takes a shot early in the period, Hamilton looks for a chest wrap, and Gerg tries to hold her for exposure. Two points are awarded to Gerg, and as the position resets, Hamilton hits a chin whip for two. The crowd thought Hamilton might have earned the fall, but it wasn't confirmed. Now Hamilton's corner is challenging the call and may want extra points for an exposure earlier in the sequence.Currently, it's 6-2 for Gerg. Now Hamilton's corner decides against the challenge. We're back to action with 2:08 to go.
Gerg takes a shot but comes up to an over/under position. Despite some threats from each wrestler, neither pull the trigger on an attack. 1:10 remain in the match.
Hamilton attempts a side headlock with 45 seconds left. She doesn't get it but adjusts back the other way for a 2 point exposure. She's close to a fall again. The crowd is going crazy, but Gerg bellies out to avoid danger. They come back to their feet with short time. Hamilton tries an overhook throw, but can't finish. Gerg takes over the top spot in the country!
144 lbs:#2 Nebi Tsarni, SR, Maryland VPO1 #1 May Prado, SR, Georgia 10-4
First Period: Prado takes a shot in the first 30- seconds, but Tsarni hits a nice shuck for a go-behind and takes a 2-0 lead. She looks for a turn but can't get it. with 1:48 left, Tsarni peaks out on a double on the edge and earns another takedown and a 4-0 lead.
With a minute to go, Tsarni hits a hard snap-down and gets an angle for a third takedown. She leads 6-0. Now Prado gets a snap and go-behind of her own and makes the score 6-2 with 28 seconds to go.
Tsarni takes a shot with short time remaining, but Prado keeps the wrist. She gets behind but can't break Tsarni's quad-pod as time expires.
Second Period: A little more than 30 seconds into the period, Tsarni takes a shot, and Prado defends for an easy go-behind to make it 6-4 for Tsarni.
With a minute to go, Tsarni gets to a body lock. Prado defends with a whizzer, but Tsarni limp-arms and gets behind to extend her lead to 8-4. Tsarni hits another nice takedown at the 25 second mark. She leads 10-4. That's how this match will end, and Nebi Tsarni takes over the nation's top spot.
164 lbs: #2 Naomi Simon, SR, Iowa VFA #3 Alexandria Alli, JR, Ohio fall 1:12
First Period: Simon comes out with an intense handfight and takes a lot of ground, but Alli pummels back in to avoid the step out. She is warned for passivity though at the 2:20 mark in the first. Simon gets a go-behind off a two-on-one, hits a 4-point exposure then turns Alli again and earns a fall just 1:12 into the match.
112 lbs: #3 Gabriella Gomez VPO1 #3 Clare Booe, Florida 7-1
First Period: Gomez is warned for passivity about 40 seconds into the first after a series of handfighting sequences. Booe uses an underhook to take the action to the edge, and Gomez exposes her. One official awards 1 for the step out, and two award 4 for exposure. It's 4-0 Gomez on the board, but Booe's corner is challenging. The challenge fails, and it's 5-0 for Gomez.
Booe takes a hard attack, but Gomez earns the takedown, and she leads 7-0 with a little less than a minute to go in the first.
Gomez gets deep on a single with 45 seconds left. She elevates the leg, but Booe gets it back to the mat. We'll head to the break with Gomez in the lead 7-0.
Second Period: The first half of the period had some incredible handfighting sequences but no points. Booe attempts to pick up her pace with less than a minute to go. She pressures forward with underhooks and tries a throw that Gomez slips. It's ruled dead, and they're back to center with 34 seconds left. Gomez is hit with a caution for passivity with 13 seconds left, but that's the only point Booe will get, and Gomez wins 7-1 to take over the nation's top spot for the second straight year.
117 lbs: #3 Isabella Marie Gonzales, JR, California VPO #1 Karlee Brooks, SR, Arizona 4-4
First Period: These two are meeting for at least the 5th time in their careers. Brooks has the edge in the series. A minute into the first, Gonzales hits a shot, and Brooks drags for a go-behind takedown to take a 2-0 lead. Brooks attempt another drag go-behind with a minute left. She can't get it, but Gonzales attempts a head-pinch, and Brooks defends with another takedown to take a 4-0 lead, and that's how the period will end.
Second Period:There's been a lot of handfighting but no points through the first stretch of the second period. Brooks is warned for passivity with 1:13 left. She drops in on a single but can't finish. Action is dead with 49 seconds left. Brooks hits another single, but Gonzales defends with a cut-back to take a 4-4 lead on criteria. Brooks has 17 seconds to come back. Gonzales takes a shot with short time left. Brooks looks for an exposure but can't get it, and Gonzales takes out #1 Karlee Brooks! That was definitely the craziest finish of the night.
122 lbs: #1 Everest Leydecker, SO, Arizona VPO1 #2 Aubre Krazer, JR, Pennsylvania 6-2
First Period: After 50 seconds of handfighting, Krazer is hit for passivity. Leydecker drops in on a shot and finishes. She looks for a leg lace but can't get it. Now, Krazer is ion on a single, but Leydecker defends. They go out of bounds grounded with 50 seconds left. Those are the only points of the period, and Leydecker takes a 2-0 lead into the break.
Second Period: Krazer is put on the activity clock 45 seconds into the second. Leydecker gets another takedown and the activity point to make it 5-0. Leydecker uses an underhook to gain position and earn another point on a step out. It's 6-0 with a minute left. Krazer takes a shot with short time left. She earns two on exposure, but she runs out of time, and the final score is 6-2 for Leydecker. She remains #1.
132 lbs: #1 Haylie Jaffe, SR, Pennsylvania VPO1 #2 Cadence Diduch, SR, Illinois 10-2
First Period: Diduch is close to home, and she has a nice cheering section here as she looks to reverse the outcome of her last match against Jaffe, but Jaffe finishes a single quickly to take a 2-0 lead in the first 30 seconds of the match. With two minutes left, Diduch gets deep on a high crotch, but Jaffe defends for a stalemate.
Diduch takes another nice attack, but Jaffe shows off her savvy defense and keeps the lead. Now a counter-attack from Jaffe works and gives her a 4-0 lead with 32 seconds left. It remains 4-0 at the break.
Second Period: Diduch hits a beautiful single leg off the whistle and finishes to make it 4-2 Jaffe just a few seconds into the period. Now Jaffe responds with a single leg of her own and finishes. It's 6-2 with 2:30 left.
Diduch hits a beautiful drag, but Jaffe steps out of it. She counters and scores another takedown to make it 8-2 half way through the second period. Diduch attempts several other attacks but can't score. Jaffe counters on the final attempt to win the match 10-2.
106 lbs: #1 Audrey Jimenez, SR, Arizona VSU #2 Anaya Falcon, SR, California 11-0
First Period: The first 15 seconds had an insane hand-fight pace. Jimenez used a drag to earn a step out and a 1-0 lead. Jimenez ends up on top of a nice scramble for a takedown and a 3-0 lead. She works hard for a leg lace but can't get it.
Jimenez gets a go-behind and locks up her lace. She takes it through three times and ends the match in the first period 11-0.
