CAA Football Weekly Awards - Nov. 20, 2023
CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 12 of the 2023 season.
Elon senior quarterback Matthew Downing was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Week honors, while UAlbany senior linebacker Dylan Kelly was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week. New Hampshire sophomore punt returner/running back Myles Thomason was named the Special Teams Player of the Week and Elon freshman linebacker Brandon Tyson received Rookie of the Week accolades.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Matthew Downing, Sr., QB, Elon (Alpharetta, Ga./Alpharetta)
Downing completed 10-of-18 passes for 261 yards and a career-high four touchdowns as Elon defeated Hampton, 51-14. All four TD throws were 33 yards or longer and came in the first half to give the Phoenix a 44-7 halftime advantage. It was the fourth straight game with at least 260 yards passing for Downing, who hit four different receivers for scores.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Dylan Kelly, Sr., LB, UAlbany (Amhurst, N.Y./Williamsville North)
Kelly tallied a team-high 11 tackles and a sack as part of a dominant defensive performance in UAlbany’s 41-0 shutout of Monmouth to earn a share of the CAA title. It was the ninth double-digit tackle effort of the season for Kelly, who broke the UA record for tackles in a season (145) that was set in 1974. The Great Danes held the Hawks to 176 total yards and made seven sacks in the game.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Myles Thomason, So., PR, New Hampshire (Montclair, N.J./Seton Hall Prep)
Thomason returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter of New Hampshire’s 44-25 triumph over Maine. The sophomore had two punt returns for 108 yards in the game (54.0 avg.) and also contributed 55 yards rushing and two receptions for 11 yards and a touchdown. It was Thomason’s first career punt return for a TD.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Brandon Tyson, Fr., LB, Elon (Whiteville, N.C./Whiteville)
Tyson recorded a team-high 11 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in Elon’s 51-14 victory over Hampton. The fumble was returned 23 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Tyson was part of a strong defensive effort for the Phoenix, which held Hampton to 192 total yards. He finished the season with 73 tackles and 9.0 TFL’s.
