Iowa Wrestling Takes 8 Matches From Wisconsin In Big Ten Dual

The Iowa wrestling team welcomes Wisconsin to Carver Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, February 18 for a senior day dual. The Big Ten matchup features several ranked individual bouts that could set the stage for the Big Ten Championships and NCAAs.

Instead of expected starter #4 Drake Ayala, it's Oklahoma transfer Joey Cruz toeing the line for the Hawkeyes against #3 Barnett. 

1st Period: after a first minute filled with hard handfighting, Joey Cruz fired off a deep single leg. He as near a finish but the action was stopped when Cruz looked to be in a potentially dangerous position. Cruz shot again with about a minute to go, but Barnett defended with a cradle that he was unable finish then eventually scrambled his way to a takedown and ride-out to end the first up 3-0.

2nd Period: Barnett chooses bottom. He's out in 14 seconds and has a 4 second riding time advantage. It's 4-0 for Barnett. With 30 seconds to go, Cruz hits an ankle pick, but Barnett turns it into a scramble situation. Barnett nearly scores, but times runs out, and it's still 4-0.

3rd Period: Cruz chooses neutral. Barnett hits a double and finishes cleanly 30 seconds in. He's up 7-0 and riding hard for the major. Barnett rides for the 8-0 major decision.

Wisconsin 4, Iowa 0

133 lbs - Brody Teske, Iowa tech Nicolar Rivera, Wisconsin 19-4

1st Period: It's apparently Teske's turn to start for the Hawkeyes this weekend instead of #23 Cullan Schriever. Teske hits an ankle pick, then transitions to a head outside single and doubles off for a 3-0 lead. He turns Rivera with a cradle from top for a 7-0 lead then cuts Rivera loose. It's 7-1. 90 seconds in, Teske's back in on the legs. He finishes for a 10-1 lead and cuts Rivera to make it 10-2 with a minute left. Teske drops in on a nice double leg to make it 13-2. He rides hard to end the period with 1:27 of riding time after the first.

2nd Period: Rivera takes bottom and earns an escape 11 seconds into the period. It's 13-3. Teske hits another nice double to make it 16-3 and quickly cuts Rivera to make it 16-4. He hits another double to earn a 19-4 tech in the final home dual meet of his career.

Iowa 5, Wisconsin 4

141 lbs - #2 Real Woods, Iowa fall Felix Lettini, Wisconsin 4:35

1st Period: Woods fires a shot in the first ten seconds of the match and finishes for a 3-0 lead. He captures the wrist and is going to work on top. Half way through the period, Woods gets a bar tilt to make it 7-0. Another tilt makes it 11-0 with 26 seconds left. Woods gets another 1-count as time expires.

2nd Period: Lettini takes neutral in the second. Woods hits a go-behind on a Lettini shot for a 14-0 lead. Woods hits another tilt then adjusts on top to look for the fall. He gets the tech-pin with 25 seconds left! Woods ends his Carver Hawkeye career with 6 team points.

Iowa 11, Wisconsin 4

149 lbs - #11 Caleb Rathjen, Iowa dec #15 Joe Zargo, Wisconsin 8-1

1st Period: The first two minutes were slow. With about a minute to go, Zargo hit a slide by, but Rathjen scored on the counter to take a 3-0 lead. Rathjen gets a leg ride on the left. He can't score on top, but he takes 1:01 of riding time into the second period.

2nd Period: Rathjen starts on bottom. He's out in 18 seconds, and it's 4-0. Zargo hits a low level attack. The scramble goes to the edge, and Rathjen avoids the takedown with a little less than a minute to go. The period ended with a great series of attacks and re-attacks but no points.

3rd Period: Zargo takes neutral in the second. He hits a single leg and finishes quickly about 20 seconds into the period. Rathjen is hurt and takes injury time. What seemed like guaranteed points for Zargo is now being reviewed. Injury time may have come before the points. No points. Zargo chooses neutral after the injury time and fires off an attack. It ends in a scramble and a takedown for Rathjen. He's up 7-0 with riding time nearing a minute. Riding time now moves over a minute. If Rathjen can ride for the last minute, he'll keep this bonus point streak alive. Zargo escapes with 28 seconds left. Rathjen wins 8-1.

Iowa 14, Wisconsin 4

157 lbs -#5  Jared Franek, Iowa maj dec Luke Mechler, Wisconsin 17-5

1st Period: Franek hits a single in the first 30 seconds of the period and finishes quickly. He's up 3-0. He cuts Mechler and takes him down again to make it 6-1. Franek cuts him around the 2 minute mark to make it 6-2. Franek fakes single then ducks the opposite side for a takedown at the end of the period to make it 9-2.

2nd Period: Franek chooses bottom. Caution Mechler. Franek is out in 15 seconds. Mechler takes a shot, but Franek stalemates it with a sprawl. Franek hits a single and grinds out a finish for a 13-2 lead. He cuts Mechler to make it 13-3. That's how the period ends. Riding time is at 49 seconds.

3rd Period: Mechler chooses bottom. He's out to make it 13-4. Franek hits another shot but can't finish in bounds with about a minute left. Off the re-start, Franek is back in on a shot. This time he finishes to make it 16-4 with over a minute of riding time. Franek cuts him to make it 16-5. He gets riding time as time expires for the 17-5 major.

Iowa 18, Wisconsin 4

165 lbs - #5 Dean Hamiti, Wisconsin dec #7 Michael Caliendo, Iowa 14-11

1st Period: Hamiti hits a low single and finishes in 12 seconds for a 3-0 lead. Caliendo escapes in 22 seconds. He shoots, but Hamiti scores on a counter to make it 6-1. Caliendo escapes but not before giving up over a minute of riding time. It's 6-2. Caliendo gets in on a single and eventually finishes with a horse shoe finish. Hamiti escapes, and it's 7-5. Great first period!

2nd Period: Hamiti chooses bottom. He works hard for a reversal, and riding time is now moving north of 40 seconds for the Badger. Hamiti leads 9-5. Caliendo escapes to make it 9-6. Riding time is at 51 seconds for Hamiti. Caliendo hits a head-outside attack and nearly finishes, but Hamiti defends with a whizzer to keep it 9-6.

3rd Period: Caliendo chooses bottom. Riding time moves over a minute, but Caliendo escapes with 1:05 riding time for Hamiti. He attacks, but Hamiti scrambles to a position of advantage. He eventually earns the takedown. to take a 12-7 lead. Caliendo escapes and hits a single. He finishes with 20 seconds left. He cuts Hamiti to make it 13-11. Caliendo attacks on the edge but can't finish. 3 seconds left. Caliendo can't get it done. Excellent match. Hamiti wins 14-11 with riding time.

Iowa 18, Wisconsin 7

174 lbs - #5 Patrick Kennedy, Iowa tech fall Cale Anderson, Wisconsin 19-4

1st Period: Wisconsin sends out backup Cale Anderson instead of #14 Max Maylor. Kennedy runs through an ankle pick a little over a minute into the match to take a 3-0 lead. He cuts Anderson to make it 3-1. Kennedy hits a single and extends his lead to 6-1 at the end of the period.

2nd Period: Kennedy takes bottom and escapes to make it 7-1. He hits another takedown at the 1 minute mark to make it 10-1.

3rd Period: Anderson takes bottom. Kennedy cuts him, takes him down, then cuts him again to make it 13-3. Another takedown and escape makes it 16-4 with 1:09 left. Kennedy is back in on a shot, but Anderson scrambles like a man trying to avoid a tech and gets a stalemate. Kennedy attacks again and finishes for a 19-4 tech.

Iowa 23, Wisconsin 7

184 lbs - Gabe Arnold, Iowa dec #18 Shane Liegel, Wisconsin 8-6

1st Period: Instead of Riggins, it's true freshman Gabe Arnold for the Hawkeyes. Arnold hits a crisp attack. Liegel scrambles, but Arnold eventually finishes to take a 3-0 lead a minute into the period. Arnold is hit for stalling on top with 49 seconds left in the period. Liegel escapes late in the period to make it 3-1. Arnold has 1:42 of riding time.

2nd Period: Arnold takes bottom. Arnold escapes in 25 seconds. He has a 4-1 lead and maintains his riding time advantage. Arnold hits a deep double leg with a minute to go and extends his lead to 7-1. Liegel escapes with 18 seconds to go to make it 7-2. Liegel escapes and it's 7-3.

3rd Period: Liegel chooses neutral. Arnold shoots, Liegel scrambles and nearly scores. Now he does finish to make it 7-6. Liegel is close to a turn but can't get it. Arnold gets riding time, and he wins 8-6.

Iowa 26, Wisconsin 7

197 lbs - #12 Zach Glazier, Iowa maj dec Josh Otto, Wisconsin 13-4

1st Period: Glazier hits a slide by a minute in but can't finish. At the 1:30 mark, he hits a leg-attack and finishes to make it 3-0 against Wisconsin's former 165/174-pounder. Glazier cuts him loose and it's 3-1 with 42 seconds left. Glazier nearly scores again on a slide by, but he can't get it.

2nd Period: Glazier takes bottom. He's out right away, and it's 4-1. Glazier hits a single and finishes with 45 seconds left to make it 7-1. Otto also earned his second stall call to make it 8-1. Otto escapes in short time to make it 8-2.

3rd Period: Otto chooses bottom. He's out with 90 seconds to go, and it's 8-3. Glazier hits a double to make it 11-3. Otto is out again, and it's 11-4. Another stall call and riding time make it 13-4 for Glazier.

Iowa 30, Wisconsin 7

285 lbs - Bradley Hill, Iowa maj dec Gannon Rosenfeld, Wisconsin 11-3

1st Period: Hill hits a single half way through the period. He finishes 30 seconds later for the 3-0 lead. Rosenfeld escapes on the restart to make it 3-1.

2nd Period: Hill chooses bottom. He escapes to make it 4-1. He attacks and finishes to make it 7-1, and now he's going to work on top. Rosenfeld escapes with 30 seconds to go, and it's 7-2.

3rd Period: Rosenfeld chooses bottom. He's out, and it's 7-3. Rosenfeld shoots, but Hill counters, and it's 10-3. Hill rides for the 11-3 major decision.
