No. 16 North Carolina Baseball Beats No. 22 Campbell With Big 9th

North Carolina Baseball traveled to Campbell for showdown of two programs in the NCAA Baseball rankings this week. The Tar Heels won 7-3.

For 8.5 innings, North Carolina Baseball and Campbell Baseball played a NCAA Tournament-like game in Buies Creek, N.C. The only matchup of the night in the country featuring a pair of Top-25 teams, No. 16 North Carolina surged ahead in the ninth inning with four runs to break 3-3 tie to beat No. 22 Campbell 7-3 on March 5. 

For the bulk of the night, the bullpens of both teams held strong, but Campbell reliever Jackson Roberts allowed three straight base runners to start the ninth inning. The Camels went to their closer, and star hitter, Grant Knipp but the senior allowed three hits before getting out of the inning. 

Campbell took a lead in the first inning with a home run by Lawson Harrill in the first inning. Vance Honeycutt’s RBI single put UNC on the board in the fifth inning and Casey Cook have the Tar Heels a a 3-1 lead with a double. Dalen Thompson’s RBI double cut into the lead and Harrill tied the game with a sacrifice fly. 

Dalton Pence struck out five in 2.1 innings for UNC to help the Tar Heels stay in the game.

UNC Baseball broke open a 3-3 score in the ninth inning with four runs and now looks to close out the game.

With the bases loaded and one out, Anthony Donofrio hit a ground rule double to give UNC a 6-3 lead. The ground rule double prevented from the play being a bases-clearing double.

Casey Cook singled to right field to drive in Colby Wilkerson as UNC takes a 4-3 lead on on Campbell.

Star catcher Grant Knipp replaced Jackson Roberts on the mound with the bases loaded and no outs in a 3-3 game. This is Knipp's second appearance. he has two saves this season with a 1.71 ERA.

Jackson Roberts allowed a single, a bunt single and another single to start the inning. UNC has the bases loaded with no outs.

Jackson Roberts will try and keep the game tied with Vance Honeycutt for UNC due up third.

Reed Stallman walked and advanced to second, but North Carolina pitcher Matt Poston got out of the inning scoreless. 

Top Of Eighth Inning: North Carolina Baseball Loads Bases, Leaves Them Stranded; Score 3-3

With two outs, the bases were loaded with the game tied at 3-3. The Camels went to the bullpen with Drew Siegner taking over for Packy Bradley. He struckout Jackson Van De Burke to ends the inning.

Campbell Baseball outfielder Trenton Harris threw out Parks Harber, who was attempting to score after a Anthony Donofrio double, to keep the game tied at 3-3. 

Bottom Of Seventh Inning: Grant Knipp Doubles, Campbell Baseball Ties UNC 3-3

Grant Knipp doubled to left center field to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Knipp scored on a sacrifice fly by Lawson Harrill.

UNC pitcher Matthew Mattijs was able to get out of inning after the run.

Packy Bradley struckout Vance Honeycutt to end the top of the seventh inning. Packy has now gone 2.1 innings with 31 pitches.

Kyle Percival left the game with on on and no outs and right-hander Matthew Mattijs took over. 

He did his job. The righty struck out three batters in a row to end the inning.

Bradley Packy induced a ground out and a flyout and after a Luke Stevenson walk, forced another ground out to end the inning.

Kyle Percival got out of the inning with a pop out.

Cameron Padgett walked Grant Knipp and after a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, Dalen Thompson singled to cut the lead to 3-2. 

Padgett was pulled for Kyle Percival.

Dalton Pence recorded a strikeout and pitched another scoreless inning despite waking Chandler Riley. Pence now has five strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

 Cole Peschl struckout two as the Tuesday starter and Division II transfer picked up his sixth strikeout of the game. He has thrown 64 pitches in the game.

Dalton Pence allowed his sixth hit of the season, but the sophomore got out of the inning with three strikeouts.

Vance Honeycutt, one of the best fielders in college baseball saved a run when tracked down a ball at the warning track against Campbell. 

Campbell put two runners on with two outs, and Connor Bovair was pulled, as Dalton Pence took over. Bovair had not started a game all season and had only pitched out of the pen in his previous six appearances.

Who Is Pitching For UNC Baseball vs. Campbell?

Senior Connor Bovair is making the start for the Tar Heels. Once a Sienna transfer, Bovair is in his third season with UNC. He made 14 starts in 2023 with a 4-4 record and a 5.57 ERA. So far this season he's pitched out of the bullpen and this will be his first start. In six appearances, he's pitched seven innings and allowed five hits but no earned runs.

RHP Cole Peschl, a transfer from University of Charleston, is the starting pitcher for Campbell tonight. He played two season for Division II Charleston in West Virginia before transfering. In two starts against East Carolina and Coastal Carolina-- both ranked teams at the time-- he has a 5.87 ERA in 7.2 innings.

The Tar Heels are led by one of the top prospects in all of college baseball, outfielder Vance Honeycutt. He enters this game batting .286 with a whopping six home runs in 11 games. Honeycutt, a 6-foot-3-inch, 205 pound junior from Salisbury, N.C. was third team All-ACC in 2024. He was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He batted .257 with 12 home runs in 50 games after a standout freshman season where he hit .296 with 25 home runs. 

The No. 6-ranked prospect at Baseball America and on the FloBaseball composite rankings, Honeycutt's athletic ability and glove, along with his power bat, drives his prospect profile. 

North Carolina also has a pair of 2025 MLB Draft prospects in Luke Stevenson (No. 21 College prospect) and Folger Boaz (No. 71). Boaz, a LHP, is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in three starts with 15 strikeouts in 16.2 innings. Catcher Luke Stevenson,a freshman eligible for the 2025 draft, is batting .333 with 10 RBI.

When Is The 2024 MLB Draft?

The 2024 MLB Draft is part of MLB All-Star week and will be in Arlington, Texas, where the World Series champion Texas Rangers are hosting the All-Star Game. 

The All-Star Game is July 16. The official date of the draft has yet to be announced, but the 2023 MLB Draft began the Sunday before the All-Star Game, which was played on Tuesday.
