Virginia’s Marlon Yarbrough added to his breakout junior season Thursday by turning in one of the most stunning first-round performances at the NCAA Championships.

Yarbrough, the #23 seed at 133 pounds, racked up four takedowns on his way to a 13-5 major decision win against returning All-American Aaron Nagao of Penn State.

The Ohio native entered the season with a 10-14 record during his first two seasons with the Cavaliers, but Yarbrough entered Thursday with a 15-7 mark that included 10 bonus-point victories, highlighted by a major decision win against two-time All-American Sam Latona of Virginia Tech. 

Yarbrough seized control of the match against Nagao in the first 70 seconds with a pair of scores, registering the first on a bodylock and capitalizing on a counterattack to go up 6-1. He added to his lead with one more takedown in each of the final two periods. 

The victory sets Yarbrough up for a second-round bout against #7 seed Nasir Bailey of Little Rock.
