UNC Wilmington baseball, defending CAA regular-season and tournament champion, will host Elon—last season’s CAA runner-up—for a weekend series at Brooks Field, giving both programs major early tests against a league opponent.

The Seahawks (11-10 overall) are currently hovering around .500 after a tricky nonconference slate which has included routinely-strong programs like North Carolina, East Carolina and Coastal Carolina. Their path to a second straight conference title has been impeded by the addition of Campbell for this season and the Camels being a white-hot 16-4 going into their first-ever CAA series.

Meanwhile, Elon (9-11) didn’t let a middling nonconference start last season—7-6 going into CAA play in 2023—stop it from putting up a strong season and a worthy fight at the top of the league standings, and a series win over visiting Big Ten Conference foe Minnesota last weekend showed just how much fight the Phoenix can bring on a nightly basis.

UNCW will try to parlay strong performances against Elon this weekend into a nonconference matchup at the always-strong East Carolina on Tuesday, followed by a return to CAA competition against North Carolina A&T next weekend.

The Phoenix, meanwhile, will go to South Carolina Upstate on Tuesday after playing at UNCW, then play their first CAA home games of the season against Campbell next weekend.

Player to Watch: Tanner Thach, UNCW

A CAA All-Rookie Team selection last season, Thach hasn’t just merely avoided a sophomore slump so far this season, but he’s truly evolved into one of the most feared hitters in the CAA.

The infielder through 21 games played is already on pace to smash his freshman benchmarks in a wide variety of offensive statistics, currently slashing .308/.396/.718 thus far compared to his 2023 totals of .289/.356/.544.

With 10 home runs and 29 RBIs to boot—numbers which currently rank him second and third in those categories in the CAA—the driving force behind one of the most powerful lineups in the conference comes into league play off the back of a massive series against Charlotte last week. Tach smashed three homers with eight RBIs across a three-game stretch and a series win for the Seahawks.

Watch for what Thach and the rest of the top options in UNCW’s lineup can do this weekend against Elon ace Justin Mitrovich, himself worthy of keeping an eye on as he’s been on fire to start the year with a 2.08 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 30⅓ innings pitched. Whichever star comes out on top might just decide who takes the series.
