50KG: Whitney Conder vs. Victoria Anthony
Conder to Win: -$130
Anthony to Win: Even
Series in Two Bouts: +$125
Series in Three Bouts: -$160
Result from Vegas: Conder dec. Anthony, 7-3
Commentary: The two kilo weight bump didn't do Vicki any favors. That being said, she did reach a medal match at Worlds at 51 in 2013 and that was with day-before weigh ins. In Vegas, Conder scored five in the first period to pace her to a 7-3 win. I believe Anthony can make the adjustments to win a bout, but give me Conder to win the series at -$130.
53KG: Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Haley Augello
Hildebrandt to Win: -$235
Augello to Win: +$190
Series in Two Bouts: -$185
Series in Three Bouts: +$150
Match 1: Hildebrandt -3pts / Augello +3pts
Result from Vegas: Hildebrandt dec. Augello, 6-1
Commentary: Hildebrandt has credited a more disciplined lifestyle and it's shown in her wrestling; she's performing at her best level ever. To go along with her athleticism, she's shown a veteran savviness. I just don't see Haley cracking Hildy's defense right now, so I like Sarah to win, in two, and -3, even at minus money.
61KG: Joe Colon vs. Nahshon Garrett
Colon to Win: -$235
Garrett to Win: +$190
Series in Two Bouts: -$185
Series in Three Bouts: +$150
Match 1: Over 22.5pts (-$125) / Under 22.5pts (-$105)
Result from Vegas: Colon dec. Garrett, 20-13
Commentary: One of the most anticipated matchups of Final X, Colon-Garrett should be a crowd-pleasing, high-scoring affair. It was 10-10 at the break in Vegas and the recipe should be this: Nahshon shots, Colon counters. Will Garrett and his coaching staff slow down his pace to be more careful? I doubt it. High pace, high volume. That's what makes Nahshon. I like Colon to win, but it to go three.
65KG: Julia Salata vs. Forrest Molinari
Salata to Win: -$185
Molinari to Win: +$150
Series in Two Bouts: -$140
Series in Three Bouts: +$110
Result from Vegas: Salata dec. Molinari, 5-0
Commentary: Salata is a veteran and has been on the US ladder for years. But she's making a drastic change here, wrestling 65kg, the lowest weight she's competed at since high school. For the 2012 Olympic Trials she was at 72kg, and in 2016 was at 75kg. And the new weight suits her; winning the Open and going toe-to-toe with U23 World Champ Ayana Gempei at the World Cup in a 5-2 loss.
The 1st period in Vegas was a snoozer - just a shot clock point for Julia. But in the 2nd it became clear what the game plan was. Forrest wanted to crowd and tie up, Julia wanted to work from space. I think it comes down to how Forrest adjusts to that, and what the officials latitude is to Julia avoiding ties.
Gimme Julia in three.
92KG: J'den Cox vs. Hayden Zillmer
Cox to Win: -$420
Zillmer to Win: +$330
Series in Two Bouts: -$300
Series in Three Bouts: +$240
Match 1: Cox -2.5pts (-$120) / Zillmer +2.5pts (-$110)
Result from Vegas: Cox dec. Zillmer, 2-0
Commentary: If you think you know exactly how this match will go, join the club. It seems to be very predictable. Low scoring, and J'den wins. J'den has been wrestling a ton of low scoring bouts. 2-0 vs. Zillmer. 3-0 vs. Deron. Losses of 5-0 and 4-4 to Marsigashvili (GEO) and Alborov (AZE), respectively, at World Cup. The problem is, his defense. How can Zillmer score on J'den? I'll take him in two straight, something like 3-0, 4-1.
125KG: Nick Gwiazdowski vs. Adam Coon
Gwizdowski to Win: -$165
Coon to Win: +$130
Series in Two Bouts: -$140
Series in Three Bouts: +$110
Match 1: Gwiz -2 / Coon +2
Commentary: Like Cox-Zillmer, I think there is a common consensus for the HWT match up. Most think Coon CAN win, but that Gwiz will ultimately prevail.
In the last few months, Adam Coon has beaten two Olympic Champs - Snyder in folk and Varner in free. Can he get through a World Bronze HWT?
Sure, but Gwiz is bigger than Kyle, and more agile than Jake. And then there are the circumstances. Coon is going to weigh in Friday morning, wrestle a Greco tournament, wake up Saturday morning, fly from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania, weigh in 5kg less than Friday (which is a thing for him), and then wrestle Freestyle. Not ideal.
All the while, Gwiz is a World medalist training in one style, for one opponent. Add to the fact that Gwiz won their only two meetings in college. It spells Gwiz in two.
