Top 10 Routines From Canadian Championships

After an eventful six days of competition, the Canadian Gymnastics Championships has come to an end. There were many different sections of competition, including level 10, elite women’s, and elite men’s. Here are 10 excellent routines worth watching again.

Competing from Halifax Alta, Ellie Black won the senior women’s competition this year. She scored a 55.457 on day one and a 56.608 on day two, combining to give her a 112.065 all-around. All her routines were outstanding, but she won the gold on floor with her stunning display on that event. Her first routine scored a 13.966 and her second a 14.150, giving her a combined score of 28.116 and that event title, which is why floor is her routine to re-watch. Her simple yet strong dance combined with powerful tumbling is what gives this routine it’s high score.

2. Shallon Olsen - Vault

Although Olsen did not compete bars and was therefore not a contender for the all-around this year, she made her gym, Omega, proud by taking first place on vault. Her first vault score of a huge 14.500 combined with her second score of a 14.350 scored her a 28.850, high enough to take the title. This University of Alabama gymnast also took fourth on floor and sixth on beam.

3. Alicia Wendland - Bars

In the novice competition, Alicia Wendland took first all-around, largely due to her huge bars score that won her first place in that category as well. Her clean Pak and double layout dismount are skills to look out for during her routine. Her 13.925 on day one and 13.650 on day two combined to make a 27.575 and win her this event.

4. Felix Dolci - Rings

Dolci did well at the Canadian Gym Championships, winning gold all-around in the junior men’s competition. Dolci is already a well-decorated gymnast, placing at three huge international competitions since last year when he made the national team. He was predicted to do well at this year’s Canadian Gym Championships after winning the junior all-around, floor, vault, and high bar titles in the 2018 Canadian Gym Championships, and he did not disappoint.

5. Ana Padurariu - Bars

Padurariu, always a strong competitor for Canada in senior women’s competitions, took second all-around at the 2019 Canadian Gym Championships. This is a strong finish for her first nationals as a senior where she can compete all-around, after competing only a few events last year due to an injury. Some thought she might even overtake Ellie Black for first place, as she narrowly beat Black at Elite Canada earlier this year, but second all-around is a huge feat as well.

Padurariu also took first on bars, scoring a huge 28.600 after combining a 14.925 and a 13.675. Competing from Gemini Gymnastics, Padurariu’s bars is always one to watch, because of her multiple bar-on-bar and bar-to-bar release moves that have a ton of height. Her jam-packed bar routine is always clean and impressive to watch also due to her huge swings and beautiful lines.

6.  Rébéka Groulx - Beam

Taking gold all-around at this year’s competition in the junior women’s category, Groulx has many routines worth re-watching. She not only took first all-around, but on three of four individual events as well, scoring first on bars, beam, and floor. With a back handspring back layout series, side somi, aerial, multiple impressive dance elements, and excellent roundoff double back dismount, Groulx’s beam is the routine to re-watch from this competition.

7. Rene Cournoyer - Pommel Horse

Cournoyer took second all-around in the senior men’s competition, with an 83.000 all-around score. He won three senior men’s titles last year in the all-around, which made him a favorite to place in this competition. He has recently dealt with injury problems, but stated he has made a full recovery. His routines were all impressive, but his pommel horse routine is certainly one to re-watch.

8. Brooklyn Moors - Beam

Taking third all-around in the women’s senior competition and gold on beam, Moors had a great day of competition. She scored over a 14.000 both days on beam, with a 14.033 on day one and a 14.066 on day two, keeping her routine consistent. These combined scores gave her a 28.099 and gold on this event.

Moors begins her routine with a front tuck mount and only gets stronger from there. What makes her beam so unique and elegant is the inclusion of some unusual skills, including a valdez near the beginning of her routine, which we don’t see too often on the beam. Another unusual skill Moors shows off is her front walkover front tuck series, which is closely followed by a front aerial to split jump.
