The Arizona State Sun Devils were on a roll in a make-or-break season. Now, though, with the season over, the No. 1 recruiting class in 2015 has finally graduated. It was a tough goodbye for head coach Zeke Jones, but he was ready to reload for next season with his new recruits.

“You look up and down our lineup and the nice thing is now is we’re in our sixth year,” Jones said. “It’s not ‘rebuild’ — it’s ‘reload.’ We’re not going to just rebuild it again. We have a standard.”

The reloading process begins with two recruits joining the West Coast powerhouse at the final whistle, Michael McGee and Jesse Vasquez.

McGee continues the recruiting success from Chicago to Tempe as he comes from the same region as 197-pound Kordell Norfleet. Yet, he made a pit stop in between the two.

McGee reigns as a 133-pound wrestler from the former Old Dominion wrestling squad. He will join the team with fresh legs after redshirting last season. The 133-pounder shined as a part of the dean’s list at Old Dominion and is on the wrestling radar next season, too.

“He will be a preseason top-10 kid in the country at 133,” Jones said.

It was not easy for the Sun Devils to pick up McGee as Ohio State and Penn State tried to snag him into their programs as well. However, McGee will boost the lightweights as he will be working side by side with the 125-pound Brandon Courtney.

Vasquez looks to fill the 149-pound void despite rolling into Tempe around 150 pounds. Vasquez, the fourth four-time state champion in California, is a huge signing for the Sun Devils. Although it might be surprising to some, Jones knew Vasquez had his eyes set on ASU for a while.

“Jesse is no stranger to Arizona State. He’s been on campus before,” Jones said. “He was at St. John Bosco with Bosco guys who have been here. He was teammates at the time with some of the guys who are in the program here.”

Vasquez isn’t the final addition to the program. On May 5, the Devils opened their doors to three more recruits: Lou Fincher, David Palosika, and Ricky Roberto. Jones believes these guys will add to the collection of the Sun Devil tradition.

“They got to live the Sun Devil way and we will show them what that is. The good thing is we do the homework on them so we know who they are before they get here.”

Fincher comes in as a three-star 133-pounder from Kansas. Palosika comes as a 220-pound recruit from Arizona, and Ricky Roberto’s comes from Georgia as a 149-pound recruit.

Even though the Sun Devils did not hit the radars in the recruitment period, Jones and the Sun Devils are eager to finish what they left on the mat.

“You can expect the Sun Devils come with some fire, some intensity, and some heat. That’s the nature of who we are.”
