On Saturday night in El Dorado Hills, California, high school senior Leo Daschbach (AZ) became the 11th U.S. prep runner to break 4:00 in the mile with his 3:59.54 clocking.

The University of Washington signee used a scintillating second half to join the ranks of Jim Ryun, Alan Webb, Drew Hunter and Grant Fisher, to name a few, who have cracked the barrier in their high school careers. Daschbach, who entered with a 4:03 PB, rallied with a 1:56.51 final 800 meters that included a 56.81 last lap.

His time ranks ninth all-time on the U.S. prep list. Reed Brown was the last high schooler to break 4:00 back in 2017 (3:59.30).

Colorado high schooler and Stanford signee Cole Sprout was second in 4:02.42.

Daschbach was one of eight elite high schoolers to participate in the Quarantine Clasico Sub-4 Attempt at Oak Ridge High School, a special event organized in the wake of spring sports across the country being cancelled due to Covid-19.
