World Titles: 5
Name | Year |
Frank Chamizo (2) | 2015, 2017 |
Kyle Dake (2) | 2018, 2019 |
David Taylor (1) | 2018 |
Add a silver for Chamizo in 2019 to make him three-for-six in terms of medaling at Worlds. Dake and Taylor, however, are both undefeated at the World Championships. Now just imagine if Chamizo hadn't had to sit out for three years after defecting to Italy, if Dake hadn't been behind Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg, if Taylor hadn't been behind J'den Cox at 86 kg, and if Taylor hadn't gotten injured last year.
Olympic Medals: 1
Name | Year |
Frank Chamizo (1) | 2016 (bronze) |
Despite three World titles between Dake and Taylor, Chamizo is the only Olympic medalist. The Cuban Italian defeated two World champions and USA's Frank Molinaro to bring home bronze in Rio. Will this number increase in 2021?
All Age Level World Championship Appearances: 18
Name | Year |
Frank Chamizo (7) | 2019 (Senior, silver), 2018 (Senior), 2017 (Senior, gold), 2015 (Senior, gold), 2011 (Senior), 2010 (Senior, bronze), 2010 (Junior) |
Kyle Dake (3) | 2019 (Senior, gold), 2018 (Senior, gold), 2008 (Junior GR) |
David Taylor (3) | 2018 (Senior, gold), 2013 (University, bronze), 2007 (Junior) |
Vito Arujau (2) | 2019 (Junior, silver), 2016 (Cadet, silver) |
Myles Martin (1) | 2018 (U23) |
Jack Mueller (1) | 2018 (U23) |
Roman Bravo-Young (1) | 2016 (Cadet) |
That's right — Chamizo, Dake, and Taylor aren't the ones to make a World Team. Every wrestler on the card, outside of Luke Pletcher and Darrion Caldwell, has competed at an age level World Championship at least once. Vito Arujau is the only one who has been able to medal every time.
Watch Vito defeat Cadet World champion Ryuto Sakaki at 2016 Cadet Worlds below.
NCAA Titles: 8
Name | Year |
Kyle Dake (4) | 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010 |
David Taylor (2) | 2014, 2012 |
Myles Martin (1) | 2016 |
Darrion Caldwell (1) | 2009 |
Kyle Dake is the second greatest NCAA wrestler of all time, David Taylor is the greatest two-time NCAA champion of all time and Myles Martin and Darrion Caldwell have two of the greatest NCAA finals wins of all time (Bo Nickal and Brent Metcalf). Sorry, those are just the facts.
Watch Myles Martin defeat Bo Nickal in the 2016 NCAA finals below.
NCAA All-American Finishes: 24*
Name | Year |
Sammy Alvarez (1) | 2020 (AA) |
Vito Arujau (1) | 2019 (4) |
*This includes the NWCA's naming of 2020 All-Americans
Three four-time AAs, two three-time AAs, and two one-time AAs. Not too shabby especially when considering Arujau and Alvarez still have three years of eligibility left and RBY has two.
Conference Titles: 14
Name | Year | Conference |
David Taylor (4) | 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 | Big Ten |
Darrion Caldwell (4) | 2011, 2009, 2008, 2007 | ACC |
Kyle Dake (3) | 2013, 2012, 2011 | EIWA |
Luke Pletcher (1) | 2020 | Big Ten |
Jack Mueller (1) | 2019 | ACC |
Myles Martin (1) | 2019 | Big Ten |
Winning an NCAA Div. I conference title is hard. Just look at the numbers compared to All-American finishes. Thanks to a Kevin Levalley loss his sophomore year, Kyle Dake isn't a four-time EIWA champion. And like I said before, three guys on this card still have college eligibility left. I like the odds on a couple more titles between Vito, RBY, and Alvarez.
