Top 10 Finals From NHSCAs
These are the 10 NHSCA finals worth going back and rewatching be it for their excitement and/or the level of wrestling they displayed.
Thousands of wrestlers took the mats in Virginia Beach this weekend to try and prove themselves against some formidable competition. Some of the paths these champions navigated were eye opening. All the champions deserve respect and recognition.
Now, of the 55 total finals, these 10 really stand out. These are the 10 NHSCA High School National finals that are worth going back and rewatching be it for their excitement and/or the level of wrestling they displayed.
Freshman 113: Colby Crouch (IL) vs #15 Ryan Bennett (OH)
Colby Crouch is a name to circle. He’s already very good. He took out Ohio state champion Ryan Bennett in a dominating performance.
Junior 120: #4 Joey Cruz (CA) vs #4 Kyle Montaperto (NC)
Unsurprisingly, Joey Cruz looked impressive all tournament. He capped it off with a win over #4 (at 113) and Virginia commit Kyle Montaperto.
Senior 126: #15 Carter Bailey (CA) vs #14 Nico Provo (CT)
You can fast forward until there are six seconds left in the match, but the double Nico Provo hit to win at the last second is worth watching. The Cornell commit will keep his #14 ranking!
Freshman 106: #1 Beric Jordan (OH) vs #12 Isaiah Quintero (CA)
Beric Jordan proved why he’s the top-ranked wrestler in the country with this win over #12 Isaiah Quintero. Tied going into the third period, Jordan didn’t mess around.
Junior 152: #16 Nicholas Vafiadis (VA) vs #17 Nick Fea (PA)
It took a last-second reversal, but Virginia’s own Nick Vafiadis doubled down on his win over Nick Fea three weeks ago with a folkstyle win in the NHSCA finals.
Sophomore 152: KJ Evans (OK) vs Colby Isabelle (PA)
The highest scoring of any of the finals, KJ Evans and Colby Isabelle put up 23 points in an absolute shootout.
Senior 195: #18 Conor Maslanek (NH) vs Luke Duthie Fort (PA)
A big blast double right into three back points was the difference in this one. Luke Duthrie, a Cornell commit from Pennsylvania, was close to pulling off the upset, but Maslanek, a Campbell commit, used some late heroics to put New Hampshire on the NHSCA champion map.
Senior 182: Lucas Cochran (UT) vs Justin Mayes (OH)
Cornell commit Justin Mayes was looking solid, but Lucas Cochran, a 3X Utah state champion, got Sanderson Wrestling Academy a champion in this back and forth match.
Junior 220: #1 Nicholas Feldman (PA) vs Eli Fortuner (VA)
Especially for being just a junior, Nick Feldman is a specimen. The Ohio State commit needed only 101 seconds to secure the tech fall in this final.
Junior 140: #4 Matthew Singleton (GA) vs Jonathan Conrad (FL)
Matthew Singleton is GOOD good, and still uncommitted. He put on a beautiful display of technique and power from both neutral and top in a major decision victory.
