The South Atlantic Conference announced its Football Players of the Week for games played during the first week of the 2022 season. Tusculum quarterback Tre Simmons was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week, while Catawba linebacker Christian Campbell was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and UVA Wise kicker Kellan Dalton picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Simmons, a sophomore from Tampa, Fla., led the Pioneers to a season-opening 70-13 win over St. Augustine’s. He finished the game going 14-for-24, throwing for 280 yards and five touchdowns. Four of his five touchdowns were for 20 or more yards, and he rushed four times for 20 yards. Simmons’ five touchdown passes ties him for third-most in school history.
Campbell, a junior from Clermont, Fla., led the Catawba Indians to a 44-19 win over Livingstone last week. He picked off two passes, including a 27-yard interception that he returned for a touchdown late in the first half to give Catawba a 17-7 lead at the break. He finished the game with three tackles and a pass breakup to go along with his two interceptions.
Dalton, a sophomore from Berryville, Va., was nearly perfect in the Cavaliers’ 41-9 win over Ferrum. He connected on two of three field goal attempts, including a 50-yard field goal and was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra point attempts. He finished the game accounting for 11 of UVA Wise’s points.
