Super 32 Bracket Reactions & Early Matches To Watch
Super 32 brackets have dropped. Here are some quick reactions along with a handful of early matches to watch.
Every year the Super 32 brackets are some of the most dissected brackets in the country. You can peruse complete brackets on FloArena, but if you're looking for a few quick reactions, this is the article for you.
Despite several scratches, this tournament is still insanely deep. Earlier today, we expected to see six of the nation's #1 ranked wrestlers in action tomorrow. That number was unfortunately cut in half after the brackets were released as Nasir Bailey, Ryder Block, and Brayden Thompson will not be competing. Those scratches and a few others may put a temporary damper on the depth of the tournament, but not by much, and not for long, as Super 32 is still much deeper than any other high school folkstyle tournament in the country.
When the first whistles blow tomorrow, get ready for incredible action from 8:00 am est on. Here are 13 first or second-round matches you won't want to miss early tomorrow.
Round of 128
106 - Tyler Garvin vs Aydan Thomas - Stillwater, Oklahoma's Aydan Thomas finished on the podium in Fargo, and he's hoping to do the same in Greensboro, but he'll start his day with Fargo champ Tyler Garvin of Maryland right off the bat.
113 - #1 Anthony Knox vs Canon Acklin - Top seed Anthony Knox is the favorite to win the whole bracket at 113 lbs, but he'll have NHSCA placer Canon Acklin of Oklahoma in the round of 128. Knox is no stranger to tough paths though. His first match en route to his 2021 Fargo title came against PIAA champ Louie Gill. Still, this isn't the easiest opening bout.
113 - Jayden Raney vs Timothy Koester - Fargo champ Jayden Raney recently switched his registration from 106 lbs to 113 lbs. His first-round match will be against Timothy Koester, an Iowa state champ who had to knock off #17 Dru Ayala in the state semifinals.
120 - #20 Adrian DeJesus vs Landon Bainey - DeJesus finished 3rd here a year ago and has since won a New Jersey state title and an NHSCA freshman title. He moved up from 113 lbs where he was originally registered, and his opening match will be against a tough Pennsylvania placer, Landon Bainey, who competes everywhere and is pretty seasoned.
126 - #19 Adrian Meza vs Mason Ziegler - Meza is a Fargo champ, but he didn't earn a seed due to the depth of 126 lbs. His opening match will be against Mason Ziegler who is fresh off a win over Fargo Finalist Sam Herring at PA Power's True Power event.
132 - Paul Kelly vs Luke Simcox - California and Reno TOC placer Paul Kelly of Poway is scheduled to open with a fun matchup against Fargo placer Luke Simcox of Central Mountain, Pennsylvania.
132 - #14 Zan Fugitt vs Devon Magro - Bishop McCort sophomore Devon Magro will see U17 Greco World teamer Zan Fugitt early. This will be a tough test for Magro who seems to have a nice upside.
Round of 64
113 - Patrick O’Keefe vs Nathan Carrillo - O'Keefe was a New Jersey state finalist as a freshman, and he has several ranked wins since then. He could see #13 Nathan Carrillo, a St. John Bosco, California freshman who finished fourth at Fargo before setting foot on a high school campus.
160 - #9 Andrew Christie vs #13 Zane Licht - This matchup shows the depth of Super 32. Two top-thirteen 160-pounders could square off in the round of 64. Both Christie and Licht had victories over #9 (152) Zach Hanson at PNL in September, but the two didn't cross paths at that event due to a Licht injury. We should see that bout early in day one's afternoon session.
170 - #13 Jed Wester vs Tyler Eise - Jed Wester and Ty Eise have had strong showings this fall, Wester at PNL and Eise at Elite 8 Duals. Expect a competitive early match here at 170 lbs.
195 - #6 Camden McDanel vs Gunner Henry - U17 World Team Trials finalist Camden McDanel will certainly be favored in his round of 64 match against Indianamat Hoosier Preseason Open finalist Gunner Henry, but the Indiana native is a tough out who will look to challenge the #6 man in the country.
