The Future Of Heavyweights: Andrew vs Sousa Tops IBJJF FloGrappling GP

Fellipe Andrew and Roosevelt Sousa are set to face off at the IBJJF FloGrappling GP in a super fight on October 28 in Austin, TX. Both athletes from northeast Brazil are hyperactive in grappling competition, but they have never crossed paths on the mats.

Andrew has become one of the most successful grapplers in the world. He currently holds the No. 1 spot on the IBJJF ranking, for the third consecutive time. While representing Alliance Jiu-Jitsu, the black belt has piled up major titles at the IBJJF Pan American and European Championships, and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals. Earlier this year he was named 2021 absolute world champion by default after Felipe Pena was stripped due to USADA regulations. Add to that: four Pans titles, four European titles and a Brazileiros gold.

Andrew will be facing Sousa, a black belt who represents Fight Sports out of Miami, FL. Sousa has become widely recognized as one of the top competitors of his generation for his many achievements as a black belt, including winning the AJP King Of Mats and AJP Grand Slam Abu Dhabi in 2021. This year, Sousa earned gold at the ADCC Brazilian Trials to win his spot in the main event, in which he ended up in third. Earlier this year, Sousa took two bronze medals at the 2022 IBJJF Pan Championships, his first major as a black belt.

Sousa is currently preparing for competitions in gi and no-gi. He will be participating at the no-gi tournament, Eddie Bravo Invitation on Sunday, October 23, and a week later, at the IBJJF FloGrappling GP.

“It will be a challenge for me to train and fight in both modalities in a short time, but that's what moves me,” Sousa said. “I'm training jiu-jitsu every day with all my Fight Sports training partners. After the EBI tournament and IBJJF GP, I will be focusing on the No-Gi Worlds.”

The event card will also have a four-man medium heavyweight bracket, a four-woman lightweight bracket and another amazing super fight between Johnatha Alves and Mathias Luna.

FloGrappling will host a live press conference on Thursday, October 27. The event kicks off on Friday, October 28 at 8 p.m. ET, only on FloGrappling.
