The SAC Announces 2022 Award Winners, All-Conference Teams

The South Atlantic Conference football major awards and all-conference selections were released today.

In addition to the All-Conference first and second teams for both the Mountain and Piedmont Divisions, the conference’s major awards were announced. 

Leading the way in the Mountain Division was Offensive Player of the Year Ty Snelson from Mars Hill. The Mountain Division Offensive Freshman of the Year was Justin Hill from Emory & Henry.  On the defensive side of the ball, Mars Hill’s Landon Honeycutt was named Mountain Division Defensive Player of the Year, and Carson-Newman’s Frank Lee was named Mountain Division Defensive Freshman of the Year.

In the Piedmont Division, Newberry’s Mario Anderson was named Piedmont Division Offensive Player of the Year and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Malik Simmons was named Piedmont Division Offensive Freshman of the Year. On defense, DJ Horne of Wingate was named the Piedmont Division Defensive Player of the Year, and fellow Bulldog Jordan Thomas was named Piedmont Division Defensive Freshman of the Year.

Wingate’s Evan Surgeon was named the Jacobs Blocking Trophy award winner and Newberry head coach Todd Knight took home Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive year.

Snelson, a senior tight end from Hot Springs, N.C., was instrumental in Mars Hill’s run at the 2022 SAC Football Championship and in the Lions' 7-3 overall record this season. He finished the year with 587 yards of offense, including 160 yards on the ground and 427 receiving yards. He scored six touchdowns and averaged 58.7 yards of offense for the Lions.  

Hill, a freshman running back from Dallas, N.C., rushed for 412 yards on 97 carries with two touchdowns during the 2022 season. He also hauled in a receiving touchdown and had 414 yards of total offense for the Wasps.

Honeycutt, a senior linebacker from Mount Pleasant, N.C., ranks first in the league in tackles per game (9), first in tackle assists (50), and fifth in total tackles (90). He had five sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble.

Lee, a freshman defensive lineman from Orangeburg, S.C., finished the year with 39 total tackles, including 27 solo tackles, five sacks, and 13.5 tackles for loss. He also had a forced fumble and eight pass breakups.

Anderson, a sophomore running back from Summerville, S.C., rushed for 1,575 yards and led the league in yards per game (157.5) and touchdowns (19). He also caught six passes for 25 yards and had 1,600 all-purpose yards. He was named MVP of the 2022 SAC Championship game and was a two-time SAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Simmons, a freshman tight end from Bedford Heights, Ohio, averaged more than 17 yards per game, hauling in 10 catches for 177 yards with five touchdowns for the Bears.

Horne, a senior from Lawrenceville, Ala., anchored a Bulldog defense that led the league allowing just 212.5 yards of total offense and just 68.1 rushing yards this season. He had 40 total tackles, including 18 solo tackles, 9.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.

Thomas, a freshman defensive back from Decatur, Ga., had 30 total tackles, including 19 solo tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, an interception, and 10 pass breakups.

Surgeon, a senior offensive lineman from Greensboro, N.C., led the Bulldogs to a 9-2 overall record and was one of the top rushing and passing teams in the SAC in 2022. The Bulldogs threw for 2,019 yards and rushed for 1,734 yards, averaging 341.2 yards of offense per game.

In his 14th season at the helm of the Newberry football team, Knight led the Wolves to the 2022 SAC Football Championship, the second Newberry football championship in as many years, with a 7-2 record in the conference. The Wolves rank fourth in the league in total offense (4,123 yards), fifth in yards per game (374.8), and third in points per game (31.2). They finished the regular season ranked No. 18 nationally. 

Tusculum led the way with 16 All-SAC selections, while Mars Hill had 15 All-SAC selections, followed by Newberry’s 14 All-SAC selections. Carson-Newman and Limestone each had 12 All-SAC selections and Wingate had 11 All-SAC selections. Lenoir-Rhyne and Emory & Henry had eight all-conference picks each, while Barton and Catawba had five selections each. Rounding out the All-SAC picks were UVA Wise with four and Erskine with two.
