#1 Garvin vs Cadet World Champ Shapiro Added To Who's Number One
The midwest top dog vs the East Coast World champ. We find out who’s number one on September 18th.
Maryland’s Meyer Shapiro won a Cadet World title this summer at one of the world's toughest weight classes, but he’ll have to knock off Iowa’s Hunter Garvin in order to call himself the #1 wrestler in the country at 145 lbs.
Already a 2X state champion and 3X finalist, Iowa City West senior Hunter Garvin has been known in Iowa for a while. However, he really made a name for himself on the national level in 2020 with a 3rd place performance at Super 32. En route to his impressive finish, Garvin beat now Northern Colorado and UPenn wrestlers Benji Alanis and Kyle Hauserman as well as outplaced the man who defeated him on the front side, Ramon Ramos.
Garvin proved this wasn’t an outlying performance in April when he won his third Folkstyle Nationals title in arguably the hardest weight at the tournament. Garvin had to go through Super 32 champ Alek Martin and fellow Who’s Number One competitor Jordan Williams.

If you weren’t on the Meyer Shapiro train before this summer, it’s time to hop on. After winning the Cadet World Team Trials at 65 kg, Shapiro rode the momentum all the way to a World title in Budapest. It was no easy age level bracket for Shapiro as he had to beat Russia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia to claim gold. After a summer like the one Shapiro had, the sky is the limit for the young man.
