Royler Gracie | Old School: Legends of Jiu-Jitsu

Apr 22, 2020

In Old School: Legends of Jiu-Jitsu we'll look back at the most influential names of yesteryear, the men and women who tore it up on the competition scene and had the biggest influence on the sport as we know it.

In this episode we feature the first King of the Featherweights, the four-time IBJJF World Champion and three-time ADCC champ Royler Gracie.

Certainly the most prolific competitor of his family during this era, and possibly the most prolific in the entire Gracie family, Royler was on the frontline of competition during the beginnings of the modern era of the sport and blazed a trail for others to follow.

With experience competing in gi, no-gi, MMA and even bare-knuckle vale tudo, Royler fearlessly took on all manner of opponents. Win or lose he always laid it on the line, representing both himself, the art and his family name.

Technically, Royler bridged the gap between the traditional and modern eras, and not just as a competitor but as a coach, too. As one of the heads of the Gracie Humaita team, he helped produced such legendary names as Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, Leticia Ribeiro and many others.

Royler's status as an IBJJF Hall of Famer and his incredible, multi-disciplinary approach to combat firmly puts him in the category of "Legend" and we are proud to have been able to feature on this episode of Old School.
